SPEAKING DIFFICULTIES CONFRONTED BY ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (EFL) STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

 

Speaking has been the most important skill in English language to be mastered by the students. However, speaking has always been considered the hardest skill in English. This research aims to investigate common speaking difficulties confronted by the EFL students. A survey research design by using close-ended questionnaires was employed in this research. Close-ended questionnaires were used to enable the researcher to collect the data. The participants of this research were 11th grade students of one of senior high schools in Cimahi, involving 32 students. The findings revealed that common speaking difficulties confronted by the EFL students were difficulties when translating Bahasa to English before they speak, as stated by 28 students (87.5%), difficulties when speaking in correct intonation, as stated by 27 students (84.3%), difficulties in vocabulary, as stated by 26 students (81.3%), pronunciation, as stated by 25 students (78.2%), and understanding in grammar, as stated by 25 students (78,2%). Speaking difficulties confronted by the EFL students are also related to their confidence, the students are sometimes afraid of making mistakes when they speak English. They also feel nervous and worried when they speak English.
