THE STUDENTS’ COPING STRATEGIES TO DEAL WITH ENGLISH SPEECH

ABSTRACT

The objective of the study is to reveal the phenomenon of coping strategies in doing English speech in several students’ associations in one of private universities in Indonesia. As it is believed that students’ associations gather a lots of students from their departments. They are asked to have several competencies while join with the students’ association. One of their competencies should be able to communicate in English. This research tries to find out their coping strategies when they are asked to present about their departments. The researcher uses mix method to get thick and deep data. The researcher explains the result briefly. The researcher takes the participants from eleven students’ associations. Then, the researcher analyses their coping strategies to deal with the text. The instrument uses cope inventory adopted from Carver et al. (1989) in Yugafiati (2015). The result shows fourteen coping strategies. The active coping is 84%. The planning is 76%. The suppression of competing activities is 50%. The restraint coping is 65%. The seeking social support for instrumental reasons is 86%. The seeking social support for emotional reasons is 67%. The positive reinterpretation and growth is 83%. The acceptance is 73%. The turning to religion is 92%. The focus on and venting of emotion is 37%. The denial is 40%. The behavioural disengagement is 20%. The mental disengagement is 54%. And the drugs disengagement is 0%. It can be concluded that most of the students turn to the God when they deal with English speech.
